Camino day 4

This will be a quick post, but I’ll share more later. 

It was a rainy day for the pilgrims.

The walk was hard but we all made the nearly 15 miles. It rained just about the whole day so we were drenched and muddy by the time we made it to our B&B.

These are some of the animal friends we made. The caterpillar was found in Dan’s salad at lunch 🤢. Claire wanted to take him on the Camino with us as a pet, but we talked her into leaving him on a plant.

We just finished breakfast and are all moving quite slowly. It’s going to rain all day again, which is lowering our motivation for sure, but we are excited to reach the cathedral in Santiago today.

Our day started off bright and early with a lovely breakfast at our B&B.  After breakfast, the same van driver from yesterday brought us down into Sarria to begin our Camino. The day was long, hot, and hard, but I think the reviews from the pilgrims in my group are all favorable about the experience so far. Our total distance walked today was about 15 miles.  The scenery is beautiful! We walked through small villages and farm land. Here are some of the cows that shared the way with us today. Dan was stopped by two separate cow traffic jams!  We have each met a few pilgrims that are sharing the journey with us. Claire has definitely made the most new friends so far. More about the fellow pilgrims in posts to come.  After a long day of walking, we arrived our tonight’s B&B. It is a cute little camp and cabin style place. Lesson 1- life is unpredictable

Along the winding road I live on there are several of these signs.  One of them is directly across from our driveway so I see it every day. Since we moved to this house six years ago I’ve often thought the sign was placed there as a message or symbol for me. For the current stage of life I find myself in, it seems the perfect reminder that the journey each one of us is on was never intended to be a straight path.  For many years I have been intrigued with the El Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage and at some point decided to arrange a trip for 2023 in celebration of my 50th birthday. Age 50 seemed a perfect time to have an exciting motivator to get in better shape, an intentional focus on seeking direction for what I hope the second half of my life might include, and a chance to deepen my faith and connect with God in new ways. The Camino starts tomorrow!

Here we are waiting for our shuttle to take us from Santiago to the bed and breakfast in Sarria where the Camino starts for us. An hour and a half later, after riding up a winding dirt road, we ended up at a beautiful estate on a hillside.  The host cooked an AMAZING dinner for us including homemade pasta.  We’re ready for bed and feeling all kinds of emotions about the start of our pilgrimage! In the morning we are off! Buen Camino!
