Camino Day 1
Our day started off bright and early with a lovely breakfast at our B&B.

After breakfast, the same van driver from yesterday brought us down into Sarria to begin our Camino. The day was long, hot, and hard, but I think the reviews from the pilgrims in my group are all favorable about the experience so far. Our total distance walked today was about 15 miles.
The scenery is beautiful! We walked through small villages and farm land. Here are some of the cows that shared the way with us today. Dan was stopped by two separate cow traffic jams!
We have each met a few pilgrims that are sharing the journey with us. Claire has definitely made the most new friends so far. More about the fellow pilgrims in posts to come.

After a long day of walking, we arrived our tonight’s B&B. It is a cute little camp and cabin style place. The dinner was good and the wine, laughter, and friends around the table made it a wonderful evening.

Here is our cabin for tonight. The down side is that ‘summer’ in this part of Spain evidently begins promptly on July 1 and the air conditioning is not turned on a day before, even though each cabin is a sweltering box with one small window without screens.
Also, this is truly the only pillow given to those of us staying in the ‘matrimonial’ cabins.

One single pillow for us to share. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I did politely ask the very confused front desk staff if we might have a second one and they agreed.

Also, I seem to have developed some type of contact dermatitis. This is the first time time in my life that I’ve not been able to ask my mom, who was a registered nurse, when I’ve had a mystery ailment. I have a few different creams and ointments that will hopefully help me through, but this was a very sad realization for me this evening.
All that aside- I’m (mostly) ready for my very early alarm to go off so I can start it all again tomorrow. Dan and I are so tired that these inconveniences probably won’t affect our ability to sleep.
Buen Camino!

Buen Camino!
Buen Camino fellow travelers! Finally figured out how to comment (with my son's assistance). What you have on your ankle is probably heat rash where your pants rubbed on your legs. At least that's been my experience. Heat and humidity bring it on for me. Cortisone cream may help. And BTW, 15 miles is a long day. I think our longest day was 13.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nan! we have long days planned due to reducing the number of days, even though we shortened the route. tomorrow is scheduled for 20 miles! we’ll do our best and taxi as needed. Thanks for the suggestion about the rash. it has now spread so I’m not exactly sure what it is. hopefully it will get better or I’ll have to seek medical treatment I guess.
ReplyDeleteI should have said we shortened the route to accommodate everyone’s schedules.
